Community involvement is a terrific way to recruit potential members and to engage current members at the same time. Give one of these tips a try and connect with both your members and neighbors.
Participate in Project Framtid.
Do you have members interested in working with young people? Project Framtid is an ideal choice for lodges looking to work with youth in the community. From sponsoring a sports team to teaching Norwegian literature at a school, there are almost limitless options for your lodge. Check out the Project Framtid guidelines in the member’s section for helpful tips.
Organize a Barneløpet.
A youth ski race is an excellent way for your lodge to generate publicity, provide a fun, family-friendly event and give an introduction to a true Norwegian sport all at the same time. No snow? No problem! Consider a running, bike or skating race for warm weather lodges. Now is the time to begin planning for your lodge’s Barneløpet. For help or tips contact Marit Barkve, Cultural Coordinator at (800) 945-8851 ext. 640 or [email protected].
Host a Cultural Fair.
Hosting a cultural fair in your community is a wonderful way to showcase your lodge’s Norwegian pride. It’s also an opportunity to network with other Scandinavian organizations in your community. Leif Erikson day in October is an excellent reason for a fair and capitalizes on people’s interest in Viking culture. For help planning a fair for your lodge, contact Joe Eggers, Membership Coordinator at [email protected].
March in a Parade.
While parades are usually thought of as a summer activity, there are plenty of fall options. Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just some of the opportunities lodges have to share their Norwegian and civic pride. March in a parade this fall and use it to showcase your lodge to potential members.
