Canadian entrepreneur Cheyanne Smart founded a tour company in Bergen to showcase the culinary delights of Norway’s second-largest city. Smart experienced a tasting tour in Stockholm and thought that her adopted hometown would be a great location to launch her own food tourism company. Now in its second year, Bergen Food Tours offers an insider’s guide to the local food scene and welcomes tourists and natives of Bergen alike.
Tours are in English and wind through downtown Bergen, away from the usual tourist haunts. A three hour stroll allows people to reflect and digest a bit in between tastings. Proprietors and chefs give behind-the-scenes glimpses into their kitchens and market stalls while Ms. Smart rounds out the tour with a historical and cultural perspective on Bergen, named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015. Some of the delicacies featured on the tour include trekroneren—a reindeer hot dog—smoked fish, flights of craft beer, aquavit tastings and brunost cheesecake. Sweet Rain, the bakery that makes this sumptuous cheesecake, was featured on a British baking show after Bergen Food Tours highlighted their unusual dish.
