Are you looking for a Nordic podcast to listen to? In the May issue of Viking, we spotlight a new podcast about Nordic music hosted by Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing.
The Nordics Unveiled explores themes of Nordic mythology, folk music, Sámi traditions, philosophy, architecture and nature. The series is guided by a desire to uncover how history has shaped us and what we can learn from who we are today. In each episode, Hemsing and her guests, including Per Sundnes and Terje Isungset, break down how different concepts characterize the history of Nordic music and inform the future of the genre.
Eldbjørg is one of the leading violinists of her generation. You may recognize her name from a previous issue of Viking. In the April 2014 issue, we highlighted Eldbjørg and her sister, Ragnhild, and learned about what inspires them musically.
Hailing from Valdres, Norway, Ragnhild and Eldbjørg grew up in a musical household and started playing the violin at the age of 5. While in elementary school, they gave their first performance for the Norwegian Royal Family. Since then, the classical violinists have garnered awards and acclaim from around the world for both their solo and ensemble work.
Many of their musical inspirations come from classical music, folk music, jazz and opera. Some of their favorite musicians include Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, Swedish clarinetist Martin Fröst and violinists Janine Jansen, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Jascha Heifetz and David Oistrakh.
