Reality television is a relatively new genre of programming that started in the 1990’s. The formula is typically similar, where a group of strangers share an experience, do challenges, and eventually get eliminated until just one winner is left standing with the prize. They have become quite popular over the years and often feature exotic locales and cultures.
Included on the list of reality shows in a gorgeous location is the wildly popular, Alt for Norge or The Great Norway Adventure. The show’s first season was back in 2010 and ran for ten consecutive seasons. It was thought that the series would end there, but in December 2023 it was announced that auditions for an 11th season would occur.
Open casting auditions were held at the National Nordic Museum in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Known for its historic and tight-knit Norwegian community and roots, Ballard was considered an ideal location for potential participants. While only 12 contestants are needed, producers expected at least 100 or more hopefuls to show up. Producers were also confident in this casting location because they had quite a few previous cast members that came from Ballard.
To be considered, applicants need to meet eligibility requirements such as having Norwegian heritage and not have been to Norway after the age of 15. One previous contestant from Ballard, Lars Phillips gives potential contestants advice if they wind up landing a spot on the show. He advises that it’s important for people to know that while they may have very little control over their situation while filming, that they should treat it like a beautiful roller coaster and to just enjoy the ride. At the very least, contestants will get to enjoy a surreal 2-week paid-for experience in an amazing country.
Finalists were chosen in a casting call-back that took place in Chicago, mid-March of this year and the show will be in production May and June of 2024 in various Norway locations.
