Our Foundation: A key member benefit
The Sons of Norway Foundation was established in 1966 for the purpose of collecting funds to be used for cultural, educational, charitable, scientific and lit- erary endeavors through scholarships and grants. Funding for our Foundation comes in the form of donations and gifts by will from our members who have committed to the future of Sons of Norway. Special fundraising has included medallions struck in honor of King Olav V, Queen Sonja and King Harald V, who is a patron of our Foundation.

Assets of the Foundation have grown steadily through the years from a modest $17,000 in 1970 to more than $1,000,000 in 1995 and to nearly $4,600,000 at present. These assets are invested, with a major portion of the earnings used for annual scholarships and grants to members, lodges and communities.

Scholarships and grant totals have grown from about $10,000 in 1970 to nearly $110,000 today. In 2007, the Sons of Norway Foundation awarded $77,118 to 26 scholarship recipients, and $29,585 to 70 grant recipients. Sons of Norway is proud of these results and the opportunity to offer this outstanding benefit to our members.

The Board of Governors and Foundation Director Cindy Olson are focused on continuing to build our Foundation. We have established goals to build an awareness of the work of the Foundation and increase support from members and lodges. October is designated as Foundation Month by Sons of Norway to bring emphasis to this key member benefit.
