The importance of strong leadership
There is no question that continued strong leadership at the lodge, district and international levels is a must for Sons of Norway to continue to be a dynamic, healthy and growing organization. This is why we have devoted so much time to holding leadership workshops in all districts. Most districts completed the first phase of leadership training in 2005 and early 2006. The responses we’ve received have been very encouraging.
At the spring 2006 board meeting, we continued our discussions about further training that can be accomplished. Past International Presidents Roy Eide and Dennis R. Sorheim joined our discussions. I can report that all International Board members and district presidents are very supportive of continuing this important leadership training.
In the “Member Matters” section of the May 2006 Viking, we discussed strategic issues and committees—including leadership training—that are key to the future of Sons of Norway. We have reviewed these five new committees and their plans with the board, district presidents and Past International Presidents Eide and Sorheim. The input we received was very helpful in prioritizing future activities.
On another note, this month’s Viking includes a number of informative articles. The cover story highlights three talented rosemalers in the U.S., all of whom I’m happy to say are Sons of Norway members. We’ve also included a travel story that takes readers on a tour of U.S.-related sites in Norway. Turn to page 16 to read that article and get ideas for your next trip!
Fraternally,
Jim Olson,
International President
