Adopt A School: A Real Success Story

March marks the two-year anniversary of Sons of Norway's Adopt A School program. I have given a lot of attention in Viking to Adopt A School, and there's a very good reason for that. This is one of the major initiatives of the last biennium and a continuing initiative in this biennium.

The International Board of Directors has set a goal to increase lodge participation in the Adopt A School program from the impressive 50% participation we had in the first year of the program to 65% by the end of
this biennium. This means we will go from having 179 lodges participating in Adopt A School to 263 lodges participating.

I repeatedly hear that members find the Adopt A School program rewarding and that it is building great relationships between lodges and the local community. What a great way to attract new and young family members to your lodge.

Here are two good examples that I have heard of:

  • Norskfødt 1-590 in Morris, Minn., put together a historical reenactment about Scandinavian homesteaders for local students. The members had a Scandinavian immigrant trunk full of items from the settlers' homeland, and they also gave students a taste of flatbread and demonstrated daily chores. The program took place on a Scandinavian farm site, and the newspaper even
    took pictures of the event.
  • The lodge folk dancers of Sverdrup 4-107 in Bismarck, N.D., taught six sessions of folk dancing to local students, with about 25 students in each group. The kids learned quickly and were excited to participate.

I know there are many more of these wonderful experiences that lodges throughout Sons of Norway are having as part of the Adopt A School initiative, and I encourage all of you to get invovled.

Fraternally,

Jim Olson, International President

Adopt A School: En riktig suksesshistorie

Imars markeres toårsjubileet for Sons of Norways Adopt A School programmet.

Jim Olson, Internasjonal president
