Convention Thoughts
I know this is not a convention year, but I had the opportunity to visit with the 2006 Convention Committee recently and a number of thoughts came to mind.
First of all, the cost to delegates attending both district and international conventions keeps rising. What can and should we do about this?
We're also finding that many local lodges are changing their meeting structure to contain less business content and have more youth-oriented
cultural and social events. Yet, we have done nothing to change the meeting content of our district and international lodges. I wonder if we should in some way reduce the business content of the meetings. Perhaps this would shorten the meetings and reduce costs to the delegates. Usually 30 to 40 percent of the delegates are first-time attendees, along with our seasoned veterans. It seems like some delegates prefer the multitude of resolutions and bylaw changes, but does this reflect the opinion of all the delegates?
I'm interested in hearing from members who have ideas or suggestions for change. Please e-mail me, drop me a note or call me. I would really
appreciate your input.
In this month's Viking, we share with you the stories of some very honorable Norwegians. In the course of U.S. history, 19 Norwegians have earned the Medal of Honor for their courageous service in the U.S. military. In fact, one Norwegian even received the Medal of Honor twice-a feat that fewer than 20 people have ever accomplished. To learn more about these brave men and their service to the United States, turn to page 8.
Fraternally,
Jim Olson
International President
