A Look Ahead At 2005

As you all know, 2005 marks the centennial anniversary of the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden. I hope all lodges plan a special celebration in recognition of this event, which happened on June 7, 1905. I encourage lodges to let us know of your celebration plans
by sending information to ljonsen@sofn.com.

This month also marks the beginning of a series of articles in Viking commemorating this historic event. To set the stage, we’ve created a timeline of Norwegian history featuring important dates, events and figures all the way back to ancient times—and all in an easy-to-read format with fun illustrations.

I am also very excited about the Adopt A School initiative,
which we started a year ago. We now have 178 lodges
participating in this program.

Beginning early in 2005, we are planning to start a
monthly e-mail communication with the Adopt A School
coordinators, both at the district and local lodge levels.
The objective is to establish communication with and
between the district coordinators and aid in the sharing of
success stories and ideas at the local lodge level. Two of
the district Adopt A School coordinators, Marilyn
Syverson and Mary Beth Ingvoldstad, have already
charged ahead and shared specific suggestions and ideas for involvement.

This month’s Viking is also our annual travel issue, so
read on to learn more about charming small towns in
southern Norway and Norwegian amusement parks that
will delight travelers of all ages.

I’d also like to add that Sons of Norway has a major goal
to continue to have net membership growth in 2005.

Utsikt Mot 2005

2004 var et spennende år for Sons of Norw a y. Selv om
jeg finner det vanskelig å skille ut årets suksesshistorier
håper jeg at dere deler min begeistring over de følgende
høydepunktene.

Medlemsvekst
Vi endte opp med netto medlemsvekst i 2003 og er på vei
til det samme i 2004 også. Det er første gang vi har oppnådd
dette på over 20 år.

“Sailing Into the Future”
Et spesielt medlemstiltak som re d u s e rte medlemsavgiften
det første året førte til 2721 nye medlemmer.

Fokus på Unge
Det internasjonale styret og ungdomslederen, Dan Rude,
økte satsingen på ungdommen. Flere cultural skills programmer for ungdom, Barnas Norsk Klubb og Adopt a
School er viktige deler av dette initiativet.

Familiemedlemskap
Familiemedlemskap som ble anbefalt av det intern asjonalesty ret ble godkjent av International Lodge. Barn som bor sammen med et annet voksent medlem kan også bli medlem uten å betale medlemsavgift.

Lederopplæring
Dette viktige tiltaket vil tilby opplæring av representanter
fra alle lokallodger. Lederne vil lære å sette og oppnå mål på
lokalt nivå. Vi vil utvikle verdens beste lokallodge en
endring av gangen (“The Wo r l d ’s Best Lodges, One
Change at a Ti m e ” ) .

Våre tanker og beste ønsker går til våre brødre og søstre
i Florida som fikk sine hus ødelagt av orkanene nylig.
Stiftelsens humanitære fond ga økonomisk støtte til de som
mistet sine hjem.

Nå som julen står for døren ønsker jeg, på vegne av min
kone Phyllis og mine døtre Leslie og Lizabeth, en riktig god
jul og et suksessfullt år i 2005.
