Adopt A School: A Winner for Sons of Norway
In this issue of Viking, you will read stories about the joy experienced by Sons of Norway members who have worked with schoolchildren in the Adopt A School program. You'll also learn about the important contributions this program makes to the schools and communities where it is in effect.

Over the years I have met many people from different areas of the country and explained to them my involvement in Sons of Norway. Quite often they'll say to me: "We have a Sons of Norway building in our community. I never knew what they did." Or "What is Sons of Norway all about?"

Norwegian-Americans are grateful Americans; we want to give back to the communities we live in. Adopt A School is a fantastic way to tell the world that we are about heritage and culture-and more.

Viking is featuring just a couple of the outstanding lodges and schools that have teamed up to create some very successful partnerships. Read about them in the expanded "Members Only" department this month on page 22. The story about Debbie Miller, a cookbook collector who boasts more than 200
Norwegian-American cookbooks, both centuries old and brand new, on page 16, also interests me. I'd love to peruse her books for a recipe for lapskaus, one of my favorite Norwegian dishes. But I won't be asking for any recipes for pig's feet. My wife Phyllis' recipe is enough for one family.

I encourage all lodges to get involved with the Adopt A School program. As of Jan. 1, 2004, we have 138 Adopt A School lodge coordinators, or approximately 34 percent of our 411 lodges are working on building relationships with local schools through this new initiative. We can do better than that! Every lodge has a member with a special talent and a little time to share with the schools in their community. This will get the name of Sons of Norway out there so we are recognized as a caring and concerned organization.
Fraternally,

Adopter en skole: En vinner for Sons of Norway
