T wo of the programs highlighted in this month’s Viking may be new to many of you. The Adopt-A-School and Second Century for Growth (2CFG) programs are both new initiatives for Sons of Norway. Both focus on the need for Sons of Norway to expand its presence in the community and introduce the organization to a wider audience.

The Adopt-A-School program is an initiative through which members can reach out and support teachers and students in their local community through a variety of avenues. Some lodges are involved in reading and math programs, while others teach classes on Norwegian heritage and history. It heartens me to learn the number of lodges that already have a relationship with a school in their area.

By volunteering our time to the Adopt-A-School initiative, we let others know that we are members of a heritage organization that gives back to the community. This will help in the membership stabilization and growth process.

The 2CFG committee is up and running under the leadership of Co-chairs Joel Brude and Erik Ekenes and Secretary Norm Carlson. Together they are working with a group from each district to identify strategies to target membership growth in the 30-to-55 age group.

In early April, this committee will conduct a planning session in Minneapolis, where its findings will be discussed. A report back to the International Lodge delegates will be prepared and made available. This
is the first time Sons of Norway has conducted such a comprehensive study, and I am confident the 2CFG committee will lead more young people to join our organization.

The International Board is focused on membership growth and retention. With your support, Sons of Norway will be an even better organization in 2003 and beyond.

To av programmene som får oppmerksomhet i denne månedens Viking kan for mange av dere være noe nytt. Programmene Adopt-A-School og Second Century for Growth (2CFG) er begge nye initiativer for Sons of Norway. Begge setter fokus på Sons of Norways behov for å øke sitt engasjement i samfunnet og for å orientere et bredere publikum om organisasjonen.

Gjennom initiativet Adopt-A-School kan medlemmer nå ut og støtte lærere og elever i sitt lokalsamfunn på en rekke måter. Noen lodger hjelper skoleelever med å lese og regne matte. Andre underviser i norsk kultur og historie. Det er oppmuntrende å få høre antall lodger som allerede har et pågående forhold med en skole i nærheten.

Ved å gi vår tid til Adopt-A-School initiativet, viser vi overfor andre at vi er medlemmer i en kulturorganisasjon som gir tilbake til samfunnet. Dette kan hjelpe med å stabilisere og øke medlemskapet.

2CFG komitéen er i gang under ledelse av Joel Brude og Erik Ekenes og sekretæren Norm Carlson. Sammen arbeider de med en gruppe fra hvert distrikt for å identifisere strategier som kan øke medlemskapet i aldersgruppen 30-55 år.

Tidlig i april kommer komitéen til å holde et planleggingsmøte i Minneapolis, hvor resultatene skal diskuteres. En rapport vil bli utarbeidet og distribuert til alle International Lodge delegertene. Dette er første gang Sons of Norway har gjennomført en slik omfattende undersøkelse, og jeg er sikker på at det vil føre flere yngre mennesker til vår ogranisasjon.

Det internasjonale styret er fokusert på å øke og beholde medemskap. Med din hjelp vil Sons of Norway bli en enda bedre organisasjon i 2003 og videre fremover.
